When the Turkish Society of Nephrology (TSN) was founded in Istanbul in 1970, it coincided with that of many of the Western European Nephrology Societies. TSN successfully organized the 15th ERA-EDTA Congress in Istanbul in 1978, earlier than many European countries. On 4-7 June 2005 it has also hosted in Istanbul the 42nd ERA-EDTA Congress that broke prior records for abstract submission (1959) & participation (6135 delegates). Finally, TSN has hosted on 21-25 June 2008 the very successful 12th Congress of ISPD in Istanbul.
Currently, TSN has 378 active members and also 8 branches with their own separate memberships in Istanbul, Izmir, Kayseri, Antalya, Bursa, Konya, Adana and Ankara. Turkish membership has actually become the 8th largest in ISN & the 6th largest in ERA-EDTA.

The TSN National Congresses of Nephrology, Hypertension, Dialysis and Transplantation have been organized since 1981 and have become yearly since 1990. For the last 9 years they have become bilingual with simultaneous English to Turkish & Turkish to English translations. The 25th TSN National Congress was held in Antalya on 20 - 23November 2008 and apart from its routine topics on Renal Registry, Basic and Clinical Nephrology, Hypertension and Transplantation, it also included a pre-Congress CME Course on Peritoneal Dialysis, 4 different Meet the Expert Sessions, a session on ERA-EDTA 2008 Highlights, an ISN & TSN joint CPC, an ISN & TSN Joint Panel on Novelties in Nephrology, an ERA-EDTA & TSN Joint Panel on Dialysis Therapies and an ERA-EDTA & TSN Joint Panel on CKD and Cardiovascular Diseases. The Guest Faculty consisted of 12 international speakers sponsored by ISN, ERA-EDTA and others. The TSN 25th National Congress was accredited by the European Accreditation Council for CME (EACCME) with 21 CME credits. The TSN 26th National Congress was held in Antalya on 18-21 November 2009 with a similarly interesting program. Also during that Congress TSN simultaneously hosted the 9th BANTAO Congress as a parallel event.
TSN has organized seven Nephrology Winter Schools in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009. These Schools with over 500 participants have become very important educational events in Turkish Nephrology.
